[Fact Check] Monkeypox is Not a Sexually Transmitted Disease

On July 2022, the Associated Press, an independent global news organization posted, “The spread of monkeypox in the U.S. could represent the dawn of a new sexually transmitted disease, though some health officials say the virus that causes pimple-like bumps might yet be contained before it gets firmly established.” on their website. This rendering of the Monkeypox virus has been carried on by other news outlets such as Outlook India and NBC NewYork.

The statement [Monkeypox] could represent the dawn of a new sexually transmitted disease is incorrect. In fact, it is borderline fake news and misleading.

WHAT IS MONKEYPOX?

According to the CDC, Monkeypox is a rare disease caused by infection with the monkeypox virus. The rare condition known as monkeypox is brought on by infection with the monkeypox virus. The virus that causes smallpox, variola, is related to the virus that causes monkeypox. The symptoms of monkeypox are comparable to those of smallpox, but they are less severe, and monkeypox rarely results in death. Monkeypox is unrelated to chicken pox.
