Chidiebere Ibe (Born 31st March 1996) is a Nigerian Medical Illustrator and aspiring Obstetrician and Gynaecologist. He is known for the famous illustration of a black pregnant woman with a black fetus and is acknowledged as one of the few globally recognized medical illustrators from Africa.

Less than 5% of the drawings in medical textbooks are black, according to research, and this has a significant impact on the quality of our treatment. This talk focuses on demonstrating how representation that is more racially diverse can enhance our health outcomes.

He keeps using his influence to advocate for institutional change, one of which is a deal with one of the world’s biggest publishers of medical materials to begin including black illustrations in medical textbooks. He is already working with like minds to establish an association for young African medical illustrators.

TRAINING

There are many young persons like Chidi who do not have access to requisite training. Chidi and his team are committed to providing structured training courses to young people on medical illustrations, inclusion and leadership. To achieve this, Chidi and his team commit efforts towards developing a physical and virtual workspace, providing the trainees with work tools and resources, placing them on internships globally, engaging them to work on real life cases etc.

MENTORSHIP

Chidi is a product of mentorship. He is committed to raising the next generation of African medical illustrators. He hopes to achieve this through an association for young African medical illustrators that he hopes to establish.
